Wahoo Element Ace Takes the Bike Computer a Big Step Forward
Wahoo already makes some of the best bike computers in the market, offering cyclists a rich set of training and navigation features. Their latest release, the Wahoo Element Ace, takes the category one step further by offering a few things you won’t quite find from any of the other offerings in the market.
The outfit’s largest and most powerful bike computer yet, the device comes in a size that’s much bigger than typical offerings in the category. While that might not be a great thing for those looking for a more compact rig, the accompanying large screen, bigger battery, and richer set of sensors enable far more comprehensive tracking, clearer information, and overall better performance, whether for training, navigation, or everyday commuting.
The Wahoo Element Ace has a 3.8-inch display, so it almost looks like an older smartphone from back in the day. It has a full touchscreen interface, so you can tap and swipe on the screen to interact with the device, although it also has traditional tactile buttons if you find that to be a more intuitive way of managing the device while you operate your bike. There’s the usual range of navigation features, such as dual-band GPS, audible turn-by-turn directions, on-demand route generation, on-demand rerouting, route retracing, and more. It’s preloaded with global maps for various countries, with download options for non-preloaded countries, as well as the ability to integrate mountain bike trails from Trailforks, Singletracks, and similar services.
All the usual sensors for tracking riding and training stats are onboard, allowing it to closely monitor and log every ride you take on the bike. Unique to this bike computer, though, is an integrated wind sensor that allows it to quantify wind speed as you ride, enabling it to add that as factor in your overall riding performance. It can even direct you to adjust your effort based on the impact of wind and drafting to help improve your overall training efforts.
The Wahoo Element Ace comes with structured workouts and training plans for both indoor and outdoor riding, so you can simply choose from the preset activities for all your training needs, with no need to design custom workouts each time out. It has full integration with TrainerRoad, TrainingPeaks, and Today’s Plan, too, so all your workouts are automatically synced to those apps for a fuller picture of your overall training. There are preset screens for every element of your rides, with full options to customize each layout from the companion app.
The onboard battery is rated for up to 30 hours of runtime (nothing continues to come close to the 120-hour Coros Dura), while an IPX7 waterproof rating ensures you can take it out, regardless of weather conditions. Other features include full complement of wireless connectivity options (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and ANT+), 64GB of onboard storage for your data, a digital bike bell (so you can skip installing a separate bike bell), third-party tracking via Wahoo’s web portal, ANGI crash detector support, pop-up phone notifications, and an aluminum mount designed to install on your bike’s handlebar.
The Wahoo Element Ace is available now, priced at $599.99.
